From The Beginning......and BEYOND!

Maggie's Momma is a Newbie

Since this is my first post, it will probably be lengthy. I had created this a while ago, but never got around to posting anything. I first thought it best to get our birth announcements out (yes I'm aware it is June and my child was born in April) there's definitely not a lot of time left in the day anymore. So if you are reading this, and wondering where your birth announcement is....it's now in the mail! Better late than never! In mentioning our birth announcements I would like to say that Mitchell's Photography created them for us and they took Maggie Kate's newborn pictures! And we loved them! Mitchell is an awesome photographer and we love Courtney....she also does excellent work! So I guess they are my first "rave"! I am in love with the book of pictures we purchased and it sits proudly on my coffe table! But just in case you haven't seen it, it is proudly displayed below....along with a link to Mitchell's Photography!

From the Beginning....

So let me begin by telling you how Miss Maggie Kate made her grand entrance into this world! My second "rave" will be Piedmont OBGYN! They are a wonderful group of doctors, and let me tell you this pregnant lady loved them! Specific fave's are Dr. DuBose, who I sincerely wanted to deliver Miss Maggie Kate (and for the record, she really wanted to, too) but alas Miss Maggie came on her own time and missed the "Dr. DuBose Boat"! So Dr. Beck and Dr. MacClenahan delivered our sweet baby girl, and for the record I love them too! So below is a link to Piedmont OBGYN's website and a picture of the wonderful group of doctors there! If you are looking for a fantastic group of doctors you should definitely check them out! (PS....my "fave", Dr. DuBose, is the blonde front, center! Love her!)

Now then back to the birthing story (or attempted birthing)! Let me just say I loved, loved, loved being pregnant (and to answer the always next question, yes there will be more Merritt babies)! But the last couple of weeks were hard and my blood pressure started rising. So Dr. DuBose had me come in twice a week to check on things those last couple of weeks! Now, Maggie Kate was born on Tuesday April 19th, 2011....so let me back you up to Sunday April 17th, when Maggie stopped moving around. She had me worried. But we had an appointment Monday April 18th so I figured I would just tell them then. Monday April 18th comes and we head to the doctor that morning. My blood pressure is still high, and Maggie Kate wasn't moving much in her ultrasound (not only that but she was not "practicing breathing" in the womb and she should have been)! So we met with Dr. Twedt, who said it was time to induce! We went home, got our bags, and made our way to Greenville Memorial! Long story short, with all the pitocin, 2 epidurals, and extra fluid they were giving me I still only dialated to a 4. And Miss Maggie Kate never made her way down in the birth canal, which the doctor thought was strange since in my last ultrasound they "quoted" me a 7 pound 15 ounce baby (but keep in mind that before this said "quote" they were saying BIG baby BIG baby)! Well when Tuesday April 19th rolled around, about lunch time, they decide to break my water. This is when they tell me that there was some meconium in the fluid, all I could think of at this point was seeing my little cousin Noah when he was born. My first time seeing him, he was slightly gray in color and in an incubator, because he had ingested meconium while in the womb. Needless to say I lost it, and within a few minutes the doctors were in my room saying if I was done, then they were done, and we would just proceed with a C-Section. And that was it, my mind was made up, and away we "rolled"! While in the delivery room the doctors (both Dr. Beck and Dr. MacClenahan performed the C-Section) and nurses and myself all took bets on how big she was going to be. Needless to say we were all wrong! Funny moment....I was so worried something would be wrong with her and she wouldn't be breathing that when I first heard them suctioning "something", I looked at the nurse holding one of my hands and said, "She's not breathing, she's not breathing, can they help her? Please help her"! To which she replied sweetly, "Honey, they're still working on you, they haven't even got to her yet"! Ha ha ha! Well, I knew when she arrived because I heard the doctor say, "Oh my"! And they brought a 9 pound 2 ounce, Maggie Kate, around the curtain for me to see! As it turns out she had swallowed a little meconium, but they suctioned her out and she was fine. After a short stay in the hospital we came home, went back to the hospital, because "the momma" had 2 partially collapsed lungs and a touch of pneumonia, for another short stay and the rest they say....is history! And once again....yes even after all that, there will be more Merritt babies in our future, Lord willing.  :)  And next time I will have myself a scheduled C-Section with my very own Dr. DuBose (insert smile of satisfaction here please)!

Maggie and her Strawberry....

Maggie Kate has a strawberry hemangioma birthmark on the side of her face. It started out as a very small spot, but has gotten larger over the last few weeks. So, her daddy and I were concerned that when she started K-4 momma would go to jail for beating "the snuff" out of some mean little kid after school one day for making fun of Maggie's strawberry. Out of this concern we sought out some solutions, but we were coming up empty handed. Everyone, doctors included, said there was nothing that could be done about this birthmark it would grow and eventually shrink and be gone by at least age 2, or 5, or 10. Well, after the momma had a melt down we met with dermatologist Dr. Robert M. Rogers. He is now my hero! As it turns out, he prescribed us a topical steroid cream to apply to Maggie's birthmark twice a day, and we are currently watching it shrink! I prayed so hard we would find a way to fix or help this birthmark, and the Good Lord sent us Dr. Robert Rogers! That's why he is one of my number one fave's! I couldn't find a working link to his website, so below the pictures I have listed his name, address of office, and telephone number, as I would recommend him to anyone and everyone! Speaking of pictures....below are a couple of pictures of Miss Maggie Kate's Strawberry when she was playing under her floor gym (which she loves...a big thanks to Stephen and Suzanne Satterfield for this)! And also a picture of momma, because she had a Strawberry on her chest when she was little too! PS....the cutie in the picture with the momma is my sweet Crystal "bell", we were quite the pair!

Maggie Sleeps With Momma Now......

Yes, Maggie now sleeps in Momma's arms, at least for the next few nights. And while it's not the best sleep (one eye closed, one eye on my Maggie) I know she's okay and therefore I am okay. Which is why I must tell you what led us here. Nathan and I woke up to a gurgling sound coming from the bassinet beside our bed on Tuesday June 21st at 5:58 am. It was Maggie and she was choking. I screamed for Nathan as I jerked her up and she was very red in the face and her eyes were so big. I told Nathan to get our "sucker" out, and I quickly began sucking out the spit up in her nose. She was still struggling to breathe so I began to suction out her throat. After a lot of prayer, and all the slime was sucked out, she started raggidly breathing okay again. Needless to say, we were scared to death. After about an hour, she seemed fine, but I still called the phone nurse of our Pediatrician and she said to bring her in. They are my next "rave"! We go to Christie Pediatric Group (suggested by Uncle Nolan, Aunt Kim, and cousin Ella) and they are fantastic! We see Dr. Nesbit, and we love her (she calls Maggie Kate her Champ) but all of the doctors in the group seem great too! So below is a picture borrowed from Christie Pediatric Group's website of our Dr. Nesbit and a link below the picture to Christie Pediactric Group's webiste!

Dr. Nesbit

So needless to say, Maggie Kate was diagnosed with acid reflux, and the doctor said that was the cause of this "episode". So we are now on Zantac and we also changed her formula to Similac Sensitive. And we hope and pray this will fix our problems, but I'll be sure to keep you updated!

Bring It Own Home.....

To end this lengthy post I leave you with some new pictures of my sweet Maggie Kate, and some updated info on her last visit to the doctor at her 2 month check up! Margaret Kate Merritt is now 13 lbs. 6 oz., 24 inches long, and in the 95th percentile in her height, weight, and "melon" size! And the hats in the picture are my latest fave! They were made by Melissa Inman of Gilbert, Arizona, and I found her on Etsy. Below the pictures are a link to her "store" on Etsy, check it out, I love the hats she makes!

My Sweet Girl has turned into a smiler!
